Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Munising is one of those places that makes you wonder why more people don’t know about it. With towering sandstone cliffs, turquoise water, hidden waterfalls, and cozy breweries, it feels like you’ve stumbled onto one of the last great American travel secrets.
This guide will show you everything you need to know to plan your trip: from must-do tours and hikes to hidden gems and quirky stops.
We spent a few days exploring and came away convinced: this is one of America’s best-kept travel secrets.
Why Visit Munising?
- Towering sandstone cliffs carved into arches and caves.
- Dozens of waterfalls (many you can walk right up to).
- Wide, peaceful beaches on Lake Superior.
- Cozy breweries, live music, and local bites.
- Year-round adventures: kayaking in summer, frozen waterfalls in winter.
👉 Essential: Munising still feels authentic and under-the-radar compared to national parks out west. Visit before the secret gets out.
Pictured Rocks by Water: Kayak or Jet Boat
If you do nothing else in Munising, get on the water.
- The Ultimate Kayak Tour is, without question, the #1 thing to do here. Being right up against the cliffs, paddling through sea caves and under arches, and seeing the mineral-streaked rock up close is simply unforgettable. Our guide Sawyer made the miles fly by with the perfect mix of fun facts and dad jokes — the kind of tour that feels both adventurous and easygoing.
- For a completely different vibe, hop on the Riptide Ride jet boat. It’s part thrill ride, part sightseeing tour. You’ll spin, splash, and zoom while still getting up-close views of Grand Island’s cliffs, caves, and lighthouse. Pro tip: Sit on the left side of the boat for the best cliff views.
Both give you a unique way to see Pictured Rocks — kayaking is slow and immersive, the jet boat is fast and exhilarating. We loved doing both.
Hiking the Chapel Loop Trail
The Chapel Loop Trail is the must-do hike at Pictured Rocks. The full loop is about 10 miles, with highlights like:
Base Loop (no detours): ~10.4 miles (16.7 km)
- Mosquito Falls – ~1.0 mi
- Mosquito Beach – ~1.7 mi (0.7 mi past Mosquito Falls)
- Clifftop Section Begins – ~3.5 mi
- Grand Portal Point – ~4.7 mi
- Towering viewpoint, panoramic Superior views
- Indian Head Overlook – ~5.0 mi
- Chapel Beach – ~6.2 mi
- Wide sand beach, Chapel Beach Falls at creek mouth
- Chapel Rock – ~6.5 mi
- Iconic sandstone pillar with lone pine
- Chapel Lake (spur trail) – ~7.5 mi (just before Chapel Falls)
- Quiet inland lake, 0.25 mi spur one way / 0.5 mi round-trip
- Chapel Falls – ~8.2 mi
- 60 ft waterfall with two viewing platforms
- Return to Trailhead – ~10.4 mi

💎 Hidden Gem Detour: When you reach Chapel Rock and face the lake, continue straight instead of turning right to continue the loop. Walk about 0.75 miles to a little-known overlook with jaw-dropping views of the shoreline or continue on 1.5 miles for a view of Spray Falls – 70 ft waterfall plunging directly into Lake Superior.
🚨 Parking Warning: The Chapel Loop trailhead fills up fast. By 1:00 pm on a Monday we saw cars lined up nearly a mile down the road. If this hike is on your list, get there early.
Waterfalls Everywhere
Munising is known as the “Waterfall Capital of the Midwest,” and you really can’t go wrong. Some are roadside, some are tucked into the woods, but each has its own charm.
- Miners Falls – powerful cascade with a short, pretty hike.
- Wagner Falls – peaceful and tucked into the trees.
- Chapel Falls – tall, elegant drop along the Chapel Loop.
- Mosquito Falls – smaller, but a lovely series of drops in the forest.
⚠️ Note: Munising Falls (the most famous in-town waterfall) is temporarily closed as of August 2025 — so plan on exploring the others.
Beaches on Lake Superior
Sure, the water’s cold, but the beaches here are spectacular.
- Sand Point Beach – family-friendly and calm.
- Chapel Beach – dramatic backdrop, perfect after your hike.
- Miner’s Beach – stunning for a sunset picnic.
Bring a blanket, snacks, and just enjoy the view.
Our Favorite Local Spots
One of the best surprises in Munising was how many fun food and drink spots we found for such a small town — and how much live music there was to go with it. Between brewery patios and café stages, there’s always a chance to catch a local band.
- 🍺By George Brewing & Driftwood Deli – small-batch beers, super friendly atmosphere, and often live music in the evenings. Order food from Driftwood Deli next door — they’ll deliver it right to your table at the brewery. The blueberry flatbread was a standout.
- 🍺East Channel Brewing – another relaxed taproom, often with music and a lively local crowd. Great post-hike spot. The pizza was also great!
- 🍸Upper Peninsula Inspired – a low-key bar where you can sample local wines and whiskeys, then buy bottles to go. It feels like hanging out in a friend’s living room — casual, warm, and very U.P.
- ☕Falling Rock Café – perfect for breakfast or lunch, with great coffee, hearty sandwiches, and fresh baked goods. It doubles as a community hub with live music, open mics, and shelves of books to browse.
Heading Back to the Airport? Stay a Night in Marquette
If you’re wrapping up your U.P. trip and flying out of Marquette’s Sawyer International Airport, consider spending your last night in Marquette. It’s the perfect way to ease out of adventure mode without missing out on one more gem of the Upper Peninsula.
- Lakenenland Sculpture Park – a free, quirky roadside stop filled with massive scrap-metal sculptures. It’s part art exhibit, part playground, and makes for a great stretch-your-legs moment.
- Presque Isle Park – a 2-mile scenic loop designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (of Central Park fame). Filled with overlooks, trails, and resident deer that often wander up to visitors. Don’t miss the Black Rocks at the park’s north tip — volcanic outcrops perfect for photos or cliff-jumping if you’re brave.
- Pro Tip: If you’re not jumping, climb the rocks for Superior views. Go in the morning or evening for the best light and fewer crowds.
- 🍸Delft Bistro – fun, movie-themed restaurant right downtown and our lunch pick.
- 🍺Ore Dock Brewing Co. & Blackrocks Brewery – our favorite Marquette breweries, each with great rotating taps and lively atmospheres.
- Stargazing on Lake Superior – end your night under some of the clearest skies in the Midwest. On lucky nights, you might even catch the northern lights.
Morning: Easy drive to Sawyer International Airport (MQT) for your flight.
Best Times to Visit
- Summer (Jun–Aug): Kayak season + long days (also busiest)
- Fall (Sep–Oct): Peak color, fewer crowds
- Winter (Dec–Mar): Frozen waterfalls, snowmobiling, ice climbing
- Spring (Apr–May): Big waterfall flow, less crowded but some muddy trails
Why Munising is a Hidden Gem
Munising hasn’t been polished into a tourist machine. The trails are rugged, the breweries feel like locals’ hangouts, and even the busiest attractions still leave you plenty of space to breathe. It’s authentic, adventurous, and welcoming in a way that feels rare.
